 Introduction to Wheel Throwing Class

PLEASE NOTE: (MUST have at least 2 participants )

Learn to create forms on the potter’s wheel! This class includes a half bag of clay, all tools and glazes and decorating materials, and bisque and glaze firings. Pieces will be available for pick up two weeks after the completion of the 5-time class sessions.

This Wheel Throwing Class will be customized to meet your scheduling needs. Please contact me to set up meeting times and dates.

Session 1 - Learning to center, open, put in the floor and pulling – These steps are perhaps the most crucial part of the wheel throwing process. My “Introduction to Wheel Throwing” program (up to 3 participants per program session) gives you the chance to work directly with me on the proper techniques for developing successful throwing skills. This two and a half-hour class includes time for demonstrations, learning to wedge clay, Q & A, and cleanup.

Session 2 - Review the 4 processes introduced in Session 1. Participants will focus on creating cylinders/cups/mugs/and/or lidded jars. This two and a half- hour class includes time for demonstrations, underglaze decorating techniques, Q & A, and cleanup.

Session 3 - Review the 4 processes introduced and reviewed in Sessions 1 and 2. Participants will continue to practice throwing techniques and will learn how to trim and attach handles to cups/mugs. This two and a half- hour class includes time for demonstrations, ways to create and attach handles, Q & A, and cleanup.

Session 4 - As always, we begin with reviewing skills covered in the first 3 classes. The focus of Session 4 will be on bowl forms. These satisfying forms are perhaps the best loved forms to create. Each participant will also need to complete the trimming of their pieces and attach handles. This two and a half-hour class includes time for demonstrations, Q & A, and cleanup.

Session 5 - Glazing. Again, we will start with a review of skills learned and practiced over the previous 4 sessions.  Glazes and glazing techniques will be introduced through demonstrations. Each participant will be able to choose from 5 different food safe, non-toxic glazes to finish their pieces.  After choosing glazes, students will dip or brush on their choice of colors for their bisque pieces (clay that has been fired once is called bisque ware). This two and a half-hour class includes time for demonstrations, Q & A, and cleanup.
